American Eel

American Eels come to the St. Johns River from the Sargasso Sea to safely mature. It takes them years to make this journey and after maturing they return to the Sargasso to spawn. They are harvested out of the river by a fish farm in Palatka and shipped back to Europe and Asia where they are considered gourmet food. Although they used to be found quite frequently, the United States Fish & Wildlife Service is now considering them for endangered species status.
