Eelgrass Beds

Covering hundreds of miles of the St. Johns River, these beds are not only food for Manatees, but also shelter and food for many other animals such as snails, crabs, shrimp, crawfish, turtles, and fish. Through photosynthesis, they also help oxygenate the river. Sadly, many eelgrass beds are suffering due to many human activities such as nutrient pollution, dredging, and increased levels of suspended sediments from land runoff.
