Lake Jesup

Until the 1990s, Lake Jessup was one of the most impaired lakes in the St John’s basin. Years of direct wastewater and storm water discharge, wetland drainage, and canal, berm and bridge construction caused the lake to become green with algae and murky with sediment, with a 9ft layer of muck on its bottom. Thanks to extensive efforts by local, state, and federal organizations, Lake Jessup is being restored to a healthy ecosystem, even boasting the 6th Highest concentration of American alligator in the nation; 21 per shoreline mile.
