River Output

When the St Johns meets the Atlantic, it dumps nearly 5 ½ billion gallons of water into the ocean each day, at a rate of 8,300 cubic feet per second! Despite these astronomical numbers, often the tidal flow of the Atlantic is stronger than that of the St Johns, causing a backwash of river and ocean water. This is the cause of our highly diverse estuary, but also cause for concern in regards to the river’s ability to flush pollutants.
