Wekiva River

The Wekiva River is arguably the best protected river in Florida, with close to 110 square miles around the river in public ownership and a very successful grass roots organization, Friends of the Wekiva River, working on its behalf. At least ten of the 27 identified feeder springs to the Wekiva are home to endemic snails of the Hydobe family, identified by the malcologist Fred Thomson of the Florida Museum of Natural History. The Wekiva is also designated a federal Wild and Scenic River for its entire length.
