West Indian Manatee
The largest and most famous animal in the river is the Manatee! With its 800-1,200 pound average torpedo shaped body it is hard to miss when snorkeling at many of the springs. Seen near its favorite food source of eelgrass beds, this herbivore can eat 15% of its body weight every day! Their lifespan is around 50 years with their only predatory threat being the alligator, and only when they are young.
